Over twenty-five years ago I learned something that really puzzled me. I learned that about 10% of the population react to nervines in a peculiar way. Herbs and essential oils that calm most people down are energizing to these people, while herbs and essential oils that are stimulating to most people, calm these people down. This bothered me, as the eclectic physicians claimed that one of the signs of a true remedy is a consistent action. For example, you don't see cascara sagrada causing constipation in some people. It always acts as a laxative.

About a decade later, I learned that the powerful stimulant, Chinese ephedra (which now is banned in the United States, unfortunately), would calm down children with ADHD. That kind of made sense, since Ritalin© is also a stimulant. But, the whole issue puzzled me. It was a few years later that I unraveled the secret. It had to do with nervous system balance. The remedies weren't acting backward, it's just that 10% of the population have an autonomic nervous system that is out of balance in the opposite direction.
