In honor of the fourth of July, I'm going to discuss the concept of unalienable rights as stated in the Declaration of Independence: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…”
To me these words are sacred. The purpose of discussing them is not to address some political agenda, but rather to explain how the concept of unalienable rights messes with the Golden Rule, the law of the harvest and the whole idea of what is the moral way to treat other human beings.
This applies to how we interact not just politically, but with families, friends, co-workers, employees, customers and everyone we meet. I'm going to explain how these concepts have altered the way I approach all relationships, not just political ones.
